Another hotel room strength session

Monday – Kloten Airport Sprint

The usual. Up at 5:30. Company car to Vienna Airport. Flight to Zurich (delayed because of fog).

My workout of the day was a sprint from B gates to A gates to catch my connecting flight to Toulouse.

For Dutch speakers, Kloten is a funny name for an airport, by the way. https://translate.google.com/#nl/en/klote

In Toulouse, I had meetings and a late dinner. After that I worked a bit.

Tuesday

This hotel has a weights room with real dumbbells, treadmills and elliptic, so I could have done a 30 minute easy aerobic exercise followed by weights. Because of lack of time, I decided to stay with my hotel room session using the bands and body weight.

Same session as last week, but added a pull-up-like exercise using bands and back. Forty minutes in total.

Another steady state at lactate – and biathlon

Another endurance building session (hopefully). I decided to stick to the 200W level.

I expected this to be a hard session. After yesterday’s running I feel delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and didn’t expect my energy stores to be fully replenished. Funny enough, during the session I sensed that I was OK and kept the 200W level, apart from a slightly slower first interval. Heart rate stayed nice and low (higher than I used to row my steady state intervals but at least it didn’t creep towards 165).

All good. A very successful finger stab at 60 minutes. Blood kept flowing out of my finger for another 5 minutes during the row. I am starting to be less nervous about this.

Listened to the radio during the row. Pop songs alternated with sport reporting. Biathlon is on. I love doing cross country skiing, but for watching (and listening) biathlon is much more interesting.

The leader of the World Cup is a Czech lady named Gabriela Soukalová:

Biathlon athletes must have fantastic aerobic endurance. What makes it interesting to watch is the shooting.

St Nicholas Run

I drove Iva and Lenka to Okrouhlá where we ran the second run in the series of Brno runs.

Okrouhlá is a small village, about 45 driving from Brno, in the Drahanska highlands. Lenka and Iva set off for their 5km run at 10:30. In hindsight, I should have registered for both the 5k and the 10k and ran the 5k as a warming up, because I ended up doing a 3.8km warming up, running the final 2km together with Iva and Lenka to cheer them.

The main “10km” event is actually just 8.5km long. It’s a weird run. You run steep downhill for 3km. This is where some people passed me. Then you run uphill for 5.5km. This is where I passed masses of people.

Here’s the Strava link: https://www.strava.com/activities/444696734

Originally I wanted to do this as a quiet run, but when you run in a group of 250 runners, it is hard to not be competitive. I enjoyed the scenery when we were running along the lake (bottom righthand side on the image above) and I enjoyed passing many people on the uphill part. Just focused on the next guy in front of me, ran towards him, and on to the next one. Repeat. Uphill running is a lot like rowing.

Afterwards, Lenka and I had a big bowl of chicken noodle soup at the Vietnamese market in Brno. I needed to get some Asian ingredients.

Friday:Travel & 3×20 minutes

Woke up at 4:15 to take the taxi to the airport, through a rainy Brussels. Took the 6:25 AM flight to Munich, where I had a breakfast, had my shoes shined, and sat down at the gate for my connection with lots of German newspapers. It’s nice to read foreign papers. You get a different perspective on things.

The flight to Brno was empty. Really empty. Besides me, there was one other passenger. I chatted a bit with the flight attendant. It’s a new route and it hasn’t been advertised much, but I also think that the departure times around noon are not very well chosen. If I want to fly from Brno to have meetings somewhere (other than Munich), I need an extra hotel night, and I end up with a lot of unused time.

Well, it was pleasant for me and a relaxed flight for the attendant, but I doubt BMI regional makes money on this.

Had lunch with Romana in a good Italian restaurant in town, then drove home. Worked a bit, then a 3×20 min session.

The summary pace is including the 2 minutes of rest between the intervals.

I didn’t really force myself to hold 200W, but rather rowed on feel. Ended up rowing very close to Tuesday’s result but it felt a whole lot easier.

Heart rate was just 2 beats lower. Heart rate drift was the same.

Lactate was at 1.5 mmol/L though, compared to Tuesday’s 2.5 mmol/L.

Tomorrow,  Romana’s girls and I will do another running event under the “cross-training is fun” banner.

Brussels Strength

Wednesday

A rest day. Flying to Brussels. Waiting at Munich airport, I saw a tweet on the FISA coaching conference. In Brussels, I looked up the site and discovered a nice set of presentations:

http://www.worldrowing.com/events/2015-world-rowing-coaches-conference/event-information

I like the presentations about nutrition as they give a practical way to be smarter with food, without reverting to extreme diets. I am convinced you can get all the basic carbs, proteins, vitamins and what have you by eating “healthy and normal”. I am also convinced that I have tremendous room for improvement, while still continuing to enjoy good, tasty food.

The other presentation that I found very interesting was the one on developing endurance,  by Nick Clarke from Rowing Canada. I have no time to go into the details now, so download that presentation and see for yourself:

First time in Brussels after the shutdown. The city seemed more lively than ever before. Lots of people on the street. Anspach boulevard turned into a gigantic pedestrian area. Is that new? Haven’t been on Anspach in a long time, so I couldn’t tell.

The odd armed soldier walking around. But they were already part of Brussels after the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

I walked around the area of Ste Catherine after dinner. Here’s a quick phone picture of the atmosphere:

Thursday

This morning I did hotel room strength training using the bands. A variation on the usual set.

  1. Curl
  2. Squat
  3. Situps
  4. Pistol squats
  5. squatted row
  6. lunges
  7. “bench press”

Another Steady State Data Point

Today I ignored lesson 1 for steady state sessions. If it is supposed to be a UT2 or UT1 session, it is not supposed to feel like hard work. If it does, you should back down, reduce the intensity, or even just stop and take a rest day.

For science (or rather for my curiosity as my method lacks scientific rigor), I pushed on.

A lot of things were different today, compared to the steady state sessions that I measured lactate on so far:

  1. I didn’t sleep well. I woke up from a dream which I could remember quite vividly, which doesn’t happen very often. It was 3AM. Between 3AM and 6AM I was turning in bed, not sleeping well.
  2. I cycled to work. Made a point of cycling very lightly, “to get yesterday’s heavy session out of my system”.
  3. I had a big cold salad for lunch, then nothing for the entire afternoon, and for dinner I decided to add an omelet to my usual light dinner.
  4. The weather has changed from nice, cold and dry to 10 degrees C, rainy and humid.
  5. It is not November any more.

I did a 3×20 min tonight with a lactate measurement after the last 20 minute interval.

I warmed up for 5 minutes.

First interval didn’t feel too bad. I slowly ramped up the power for the first 10 minutes and ended up doing a 190W on average.

I rowed the second interval with an eye on the clock. It seemed endless. I knew I was working harder than I want to work in steady state sessions, but after 10 minutes funnily the pace started to drift to 210W and I had to consciously keep it down. Still, my breathing and the feeling in my legs told me I was working too hard.

The third interval was hard. The kind of annoying steady state “hard”. It just took too much mental effort to hold the pace. I did some stroke rate changes in the first 10 minutes just to keep the focus. Took a lactate measurement immediately after the interval:

laktaat 001.JPG

Feeling confirmed. I was actually very happy about this result. It gives me more confidence in lactate measurement as a method to confirm what the perceived rate of effort tells me. And thus it also gives me confidence to continue doing what I have done so far: If it feels too hard, back down.

I’ll start keeping my lactate readings, together with notes on heart rate, perceived level of effort and some other parameters in a spreadsheet.

Here’s the HR plot of the session:
