The latest World Rowing newsletter contains an excellent article on rowing (erg, OTW) and back pain which I wanted to share with my readers immediately:

Thanks for the link, Sander.
I’ve recently developed exactly what is described in the article. For some reason, 18spm strapless aggravates the pain in my lower back the most. I don’t have the pain when working with weights or on the SkiErg. I used to have a large mirror parallel to the erg where I could keep an eye on form. I never had this pain then. I assume my form deteriorated since I’ve been without a reference.

Yes. Of course, rowing correctly should actually have a beneficial effect on your back.
Personally, I am afraid I could categorize my rowing as “1a/2b”. Half good. Half bad.
Especially when getting tired. It’s also not good for boat speed.
